Child Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Survey
Although Child HCAHPS is not currently a government-mandated survey, it likely will be someday. Getting started now will provide children’s hospitals and general acute care hospitals treating pediatric patients a leg up on their competition – improving the experience of their pediatric patients and their families.
Why choose PRC?
PRC provides clients with a comprehensive picture of their hospital or health system, so they can view Child HCAHPS data alongside their regular HCAHPS data. PRC’s EasyView® tool allows clients to integrate Child HCAHPS data and HCAHPS data into one view that empower clients to create custom reports that are meaningful to their specific goals and challenges – custom reports can be generated for the C-suite, front line staff, and everyone in between. Clients can discover exactly what they need to achieve their organizational goals and results are available within minutes of the survey being conducted.
Additionally, PRC’s Voices® tool lets clients hear the actual survey responses, adding meaning and value to accolades, parent concerns, and feedback. Voices data provides compelling content for driving organizational objectives. PRC encourages clients to add custom questions.
PRC has many years of experience administering surveys to parents of pediatric patients – we’re a partner you can trust. PRC is a pioneer in accurate, timely, and reliable telephone research. Telephone research reduces lag time, engages patients directly, and reaches a representative cross-section of the patient population – as well as generates the highest completion rates, increasing the volume of data that is available for evaluating performance. PRC offers flexibility with respect to methodology and sampling options. Until CMS identifies the preferred methods, PRC could administer the survey by phone and web or phone-only for any sample size in order to help our hospital and health system partners achieve excellence. See PRC's Child HCAHPS brochure to learn more.
How is the government involved in the survey?
Under the provisions of the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act (CHIPRA), the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Hospital Survey – Child Version (Child HCAHPS) is directed at parents/guardians to evaluate the hospital experiences throughout their child’s inpatient stay. While not yet mandated, this survey is expected to play a larger role in hospitals’ Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements in the future. Funded through the Pediatric Quality Measures Program (PQMP) by the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the survey tool has been refined over the past several years by integrating the feedback from focus groups, cognitive testing, pilot testing, field testing, and public commentary. Eligible patients are selected for this survey in a way that closely resembles the adult HCAHPS protocols.
What does Child HCAHPS Measure?
The Child HCAHPS survey complements the adult survey by asking several of the same questions and adding new questions unique to children. The survey is completed by parents or guardians of inpatients 17 years or younger. The other eligibility criteria follow HCAHPS guidelines. The survey questions are rolled up into the following dimensions for final scoring.
Child HCAHPS Dimensions
|Communication with Parent||19 questions|
|Communication with Child||9 questions|
|Attention to Safety and Comfort||7 questions|
|Hospital Environment||2 questions|
|Global Rating||2 questions|
This is the first time that this research has been done for the general public, but PRC is able to provide pediatric benchmarking data from 182 facilities over the last year, so get on board with PRC. Contact us for more information.
