Child Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Survey
Although Child HCAHPS is not currently a government-mandated survey, it likely will be someday. Getting started now will provide children’s hospitals and general acute care hospitals treating pediatric patients a leg up on their competition – improving the experience of their pediatric patients and their families.

How is the government involved in the survey?
Under the provisions of the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act (CHIPRA), the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Hospital Survey – Child Version (Child HCAHPS) is directed at parents/guardians to evaluate the hospital experiences throughout their child’s inpatient stay. While not yet mandated, this survey is expected to play a larger role in hospitals’ Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements in the future. Funded through the Pediatric Quality Measures Program (PQMP) by the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the survey tool has been refined over the past several years by integrating the feedback from focus groups, cognitive testing, pilot testing, field testing, and public commentary. Eligible patients are selected for this survey in a way that closely resembles the adult HCAHPS protocols.
What does Child HCAHPS Measure?
The Child HCAHPS survey complements the adult survey by asking several of the same questions and adding new questions unique to children. The survey is completed by parents or guardians of inpatients 17 years or younger. The other eligibility criteria follow HCAHPS guidelines. The survey questions are rolled up into the following dimensions for final scoring.
